Downtown Portland is divided by the Willamette River. The area west of the river is laid out in a grid with streets that are easy to navigate by foot; the area east and north of the river is a little less 'walkable' but has great public transportation service.
The hub of downtown activity is located in Old Town and along Broadway where fine shops, restaurants and hotels create a cosmopolitan atmosphere.
Downtown Portland's attractions include historic Old Town, Keller Auditorium, the Portland Center for the Performing Arts, Pioneer Place Mall, the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry and the Willamette River Waterfront Park.
On the east side of the river the focal point is between the Lloyd Center and the Rose Garden Arena, which is also where most hotels are located.
Also easily accessible from Downtown Portland are the campus of Portland State University located to the south of downtown and the Washington Park Zoo and Japanese Gardens to the west.
